Springs and spring brooks develop throughout Europe, from lowlands to the alpine belt, at sites with both base-poor and calcareous groundwater. Individual patches of this habitat are usually small in size, and they can occur both in open areas or at sites shaded by trees. The species composition of flora and fauna depends on the speed, volume and chemistry of the water and the degree of shading. Moss carpets often prevail in vegetation, though specialised vascular plants also occur in this habitat.
